San Joaquincounty is one of the most agriculturally rich area in the state of California. The county was created on February 18, 1950 and takes its name from the San Joaquin River. The name San Joaquin was first given by Lieutenant Moraga, a commanding officer in the expedition of the lower great valley of California. As of 2008 census the county had a total of 682,000 people living in the cities that composed the San Joaquin region such as Escalon, Lathrop, Lodi, Manteca, Ripon, Stockton and Tracy. The county has a total area of 1,426 square miles (3,694 km²), of which 1,399 square miles (3,624 km²) of it is land and the remaining 1.89 percent of it is water, which is equivalent to 27 square miles (70 km²).
